The diocese have taken young people to Rome, Toronto, Cologne, Sydney and now to Madrid for the World Youth Day pilgrimages. Read more from WYD 2008 to get an idea what the experience is all about.
This is a unique experience and one not to be missed. Take part in a journey of a lifetime and a pilgrimage you will never forget.
What you will be doing.
Tuesday 9th August
Flight to Madrid and transfers to host diocese.
Days in the Diocese
Pilgrims will stay as guests of a Spanish parish and will develop friendships and links with local young people and will experience Spanish culture. Each day the parish will host different cultural, faith and social activities. These days tend to be the most rewarding and uplifting of the whole WYD experience.
During the days in the diocese there will be a day of social service and a diocesan day, when all the young people from across the continents will gather together.
Sunday 14th August
There will be mass with the Bishop of the Diocese and young people from across every continent.
Monday 15th
We move by coach to the accommodation in Madrid. Each day breakfast will be provided in the hotel and the other meals are from the WYD pass.
Tuesday 16th Opening Mass with the Archbishop of Madrid at the Plaza de le Cibeles.
Wednesday 17th
Catechesis in one of the 300 sites and Youth Festival which is a mixture of concerts, exhibitions, prayer times and cultural events.
Thursday 18th
Catechesis and later at 4 pm there will be the welcome celebration for Pope Benedict, followed by the Festival.
Friday 19th
Catechesis, group reconciliation service and Pilgrimage Way of the Cross through the streets of Madrid.
Saturday 20th
Pilgrimage walk to site of overnight vigil at the Cuatro Vientos Airfield. 8 pm vigil of prayer with Pope Benedict, there will be music, testimonies by young people and loads of different activities.
Sunday 21st
Mass with Pope, cardinals, bishops and priests and young people from around the world. Over 2 million people will gather together to celebrate the twenty fifth World Youth Day. Pope Benedict will announce the site of the next WYD.
Monday 22nd August
Flight back to England
Fundraising
More information about fundraising will be posted. Pilgrims in the past have done a lot of local fundraising and have been able to substantially lower the overall cost.
Preparation
There will be regular preparation meetings and time to socialise together before going on the pilgrimage. These are part of your commitment on registration to take part in the whole WYD experience.
