St. Edmund Arrowsmith, Year 8

We recently welcomed year 8 pupils from St Edmund Arrowsmith in Whiston to Lowe House for a day retreat based around Advent and justice, focusing on Isaiah 9:2 (“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”).

The first part of the day involved looking at the idea of Advent, and the children learnt about the concept of a Jesse Tree and how it allows us to trace Jesus’ genealogy, whilst later on in the day we moved on to looking at how some Christians may struggle to celebrate Advent, using examples such as the Nag Hamadi massacre in Egypt in 2010 and those in the Holy Land who may not be able to safely live out their faith.

We ended the day with a time of prayer focused around some of the key principles of Advent.

We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent with the year 8s, and we hope that they left Lowe House with the understanding of how lucky they are to be able to practise their faith and enjoyed the rest of their Advent leading into Christmas!
